Today's National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy claims as its predecessor the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, one of the oldest academic and theological schools amongst the Orthodox Christian countries of Eastern Europe.
The Kiev Theological Academy was one of the theological academies in Russia during the nineteenth century. The academy was a development of the Kiev-Mohyla Collegium that was formed under Metropolitan Peter Mohyla and was closed by the Bolshevik government that took control of the Russian Empire in 1917.
Throughout its existence the Kyiv Theological Academy was the only Orthodox higher school of theology in Ukraine. It was abolished by the Soviet authorities in 1920. The Kyiv Theological Academy and Seminary was revived in 1993 under the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyiv Patriarchate.

Apr. 2023 · Nowadays, the Kyiv Theological Academy is the leading educational institution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, training candidates for the priesthood and the staff of church institutions. Over 250 students are enrolled full-time at the Academy at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels.
Situated within the walls of the Kiev-Caves Lavra, is the Kiev Theological Seminary, which was resurrected in 1989, whilst the Kiev Theological Academy has been in operation since 1992.
