Narcissus and Goldmund is the story of a young man, Goldmund (German for 'Gold mouth'), who wanders aimlessly throughout Medieval Germany after leaving a Catholic monastery school in search of what could be described as "the meaning of life".

Narziß fürchtet, dass die Freundschaft zu Goldmund sein keusches, diszipliniertes Leben gefährden könnte. Leidenschaft und Emotionen, auch wenn sie nur freundschaftlicher Natur sind, gehören nicht in ein derartiges Leben, und er muss sie daher aus seinem Herzen verbannen.
