Universal wurde als Aktiengesellschaft erstmals von Carl Laemmle, Mark Dintenfass, Charles O. Baumann, Adam Kessel, Pat Powers, William Swanson, David Horsley, Robert H. Cochrane und Jules Brulatour im Jahr 1912 als Universal Film Manufacturing Company gegründet.
