Né le 18 septembre 1976 à Versailles, El Mechri commence sa carrière, en 1995, comme l'assistant du réalisateur Mathieu Kassovitz. Ensuite, El Mechri se tourne vers la réalisation de trois courts métrages. Mabrouk El Mechri signe son premier film, Virgil en 2005.
