The 1980 Winter Olympics, officially the XIII Olympic Winter Games and also known as Lake Placid 1980, were an international multi-sport event held from February 13 to 24, 1980, in Lake Placid, New York, United States.

Um zu gewährleisten, dass alle Wettbewerbe unter bestmöglichen Bedingungen stattfanden, wurden zahlreiche Schneemaschinen eingesetzt, um Kunstschnee zu produzieren - zum ersten Mal bei Olympischen Spielen.
Der große schwedische Skifahrer Ingemar Stenmark gewann den Riesenslalom und den Slalom. In beiden Rennen lag er im ersten Lauf zurück, holte aber im zweiten Lauf sensationell auf. Hanni Wenzel tat dasselbe bei den Damen und machte ihr Land, Liechtenstein, zum kleinsten Land, das eine Olympiasiegerin vorweisen kann.

Der Deutsche Ulrich Wehling gewann zum dritten Mal die Nordische Kombination und die russische Paarläuferin Irina Rodnina schaffte das gleiche in ihrer Disziplin. In der Biathlon-Staffel holte Aleksandr Tichonow aus der UdSSR seine vierte Goldmedaille in Folge, während sein Landsmann Nikolaj Zimjatow drei Goldmedaillen im Skilanglauf gewann.

The 1980 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XIII Olympic Winter Games, was celebrated from February 13 - 24, 1980 right here in Lake Placid! This was the second time the village hosted the Games and the magnificence of the event was unmatched.
For the 1980 Games in Lake Placid, the Olympic Center was expanded to include two new arenas, a complete snow-making system was installed at Whiteface Mountain, the old ski jump was torn down, the existing 70- and 90-meter towers were built, and an Olympic Village was built to house the athletes.
