Dan Kuramoto, Hiroshima's leader, is from East Los Angeles. He attended California State University, Long Beach, then led its Asian-American studies department. Through playing in a band on weekends he met June Kuramoto, a native of Japan who grew up in Los Angeles and played koto, a Japanese stringed instrument.

The revelation that Hiroshima is planning to step back comes as the band released its latest album, “2020.”.
Dan and June formed Hiroshima in 1974, with Johnny Mori, a master of the Japanese taiko drums and trap drummer Danny Yamamoto. Their self-titled debut on Arista in 1979 spawned the hit single, “Roomful of Mirrors” and the intense showstopper, “Da Da.”

Hiroshima was founded in 1974 by Dan (sax) and June Kuramoto (koto). This ensemble was joined by taiko drummer Johnny Mori, drummer/percussionist Danny Yamamoto and keyboardist Kimo Cornwell.
