Silicon carbide ( SiC ), also known as carborundum ( / ˌkɑːrbəˈrʌndəm / ), is a hard chemical compound containing silicon and carbon. A semiconductor, it occurs in nature as the extremely rare mineral moissanite, but has been mass-produced as a powder and crystal since 1893 for use as an abrasive.

Carbon/Silicon is a rock music duo consisting of Mick Jones (formerly of The Clash and Big Audio Dynamite) and Tony James (formerly of Generation X and Sigue Sigue Sputnik). The band formed around 2002.
The chemistry of carbon is dominated by catenation: the ability of a chemical element to form a long chain-like structure via a series of covalent bonds. Although silicon does form Si-Si bonds, they are far more reactive than their C-C analogs, and polymers of silicon are predominantly comprised of Si-O chains (as a result of the very strong bond).
