Bessie Smith (April 15, 1894 – September 26, 1937) was an African-American blues singer widely renowned during the Jazz Age. Nicknamed the " Empress of the Blues ", she was the most popular female blues singer of the 1930s.
Bessie Smith [ˈbɛsɪ ˈsmɪθ] (* 15. April 1894 Anm.1 in Chattanooga, Tennessee; † 26. September 1937 in Clarksdale, Mississippi) war eine US-amerikanische Bluessängerin, vorwiegend in den 1920er Jahren aktiv, die mehr als 150 Schallplatten einspielte und als „Kaiserin des Blues“ galt.
