The orchestra set standards of excellence that were rivalled in Britain only by the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO), founded two years later. Forced to leave the BBC in 1950 on reaching retirement age, Boult became principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
From his tenure as Principal Conductor (1950-57) to his retirement in 1978, this five-disc boxed set celebrates the long association between distinguished conductor Sir Adrian Boult and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Indeed many of the British pieces I’ve noted in this disc were released on an HMV Treasury LP called ‘Sir Adrian Boult conducts a concert of English Music’ [ED 2910921]. It might have been a nice touch to have included others, such as the 1937 Elgar Sospiri and the 1934 Gerontius Prelude.
