In 1954, Philly Joe joined the classic Miles Davis band that featured Davis on trumpet, John Coltrane on sax, Red Garland on piano, and Paul Chambers on bass.

When Dizzy Gillespie heard that Clifford Brown had been killed in a 1956 car accident his shocked reaction became an emotional epitaph: “Jazz was dealt a lethal blow by the death of Clifford Brown … there can be no replacement for his artistry.”
