In the booklet-notes, the composer explains how the cycle reflects his pessimistic perspective on contemporary life. ‘As I worked,’ Elias writes, ‘my personal views inspired dark visions of where I think we, globally, are heading. And I found that prayer is what we turn to when the only thing we have left is hope.’.
Im nächsten Jahr folgte Alanis Morissette – MTV Unplugged. Nach dem Tod von Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan 1997 vervollständigte sie dessen Beitrag Mercy auf dem Album The Prayer Cycle von Jonathan Elias. Da es international klingen sollte, übersetzte sie den Text zusammen mit ihrer Großmutter und sang ihn auf Ungarisch.
