Philip Merivale (* 2. November 1886 in Manickpur, Britisch-Indien; † 12. März 1946 in Los Angeles, Kalifornien) war ein britischer Theaterschauspieler, der erst gegen Ende seines Lebens nach Hollywood kam, wo er häufig Autoritätsfiguren verkörperte.
John Herman Merivale wurde als Sohn des Schauspielerehepaares Philip Merivale und Viva Birkett 1917 in Toronto in eine theaterbegeisterte Familie geboren. Als seine Mutter 1934 verstarb, heiratete sein Vater erneut und Gladys Cooper wurde zu seiner Stiefmutter.
Viva Birkett died from cancer on 27 June 1934, less than a month after leaving New York to return to her home on Seymour Road in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Viva Birkett was a British stage actress active on both sides of the Atlantic over the early decades of the twentieth century.
He died from a heart ailment aged 59. He was twice married to: the actress Viva Birkett (23 July 1912 – 27 June 1934); (four children: two daughters and two sons, including the actor John Merivale) [4] [5] [6] the actress Gladys Cooper (30 April 1937 – 12 March 1946).
John Herman Merivale (1 December 1917 – 6 February 1990) was a Canadian-born British theatre actor, and occasional supporting player in British films. [1] [2] Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, John Merivale was the son of English actors Philip Merivale and Viva Birkett. [3]
