Donald Eugene Nehlen (born January 1, 1936) is a former American football player and coach. He was head football coach at Bowling Green State University (1968–1976 [1] ) and at West Virginia University (1980–2000).

WVU’s solution to its lack of size was to play a style that didn’t require big, physical players to knock people off the football.

The most successful football coach in West Virginia University’s first century, Nehlen is one of the 20 most winning coaches nationally. Nehlen retired from WVU football and coaching after the team’s 49-38 victory over Mississippi in the December 2000 Music City Bowl. Nehlen’s overall coaching record was 202 wins, 128 losses, and eight ties.
Don Nehlen turned out to be the right man at the right time for Mountaineer football. When the Canton, Ohio, native came to West Virginia in 1980 after three years as a Michigan assistant coach, he changed everything.

Now he’ll be immortalized at Mountaineer Field, the football stadium where he strode the sidelines from 1980-2000, as his name will join other WVU greats on the Diversified Energy Terrace above the north end zone at Mountaineer Field on Saturday, Nov. 18.
