Sein Debüt als Filmregisseur machte er 1987 mit „Hidden City“ und verfilmte 1991 auch sein Stück „Hitting Town“ unter dem Titel „Close My Eyes“. Seine gesammelten Werke gab er in den Jahren 1989, 1994 und 1998 unter den Titeln „Plays One, Plays Two, Plays Three“ heraus. Sein Bruder ist der Chemiker Martyn Poliakoff .
Stephen Poliakoff CBE, FRSL (born 1 December 1952) is a British playwright, director and screenwriter. In 2006 Gerard Gilbert of The Independent described him as the UK's "pre-eminent TV dramatist" who had "inherited Dennis Potter's crown".
Stephen Poliakoff was born in London and educated at Westminster School and King’s College, Cambridge. He began his career in the theatre, becoming resident playwright at the National Theatre in London aged 22.
