United Western Recorders. United Western Recorders was a two-building recording studio complex in Hollywood that was one of the most successful independent recording studios of the 1960s. The complex merged neighboring studios United Recording Corp. on 6050 Sunset Boulevard and Western Studio on 6000 Sunset Boulevard.
EastWest Studios (formerly known as Western Studio, a component of United Western Recorders and later Ocean Way Recording) is a recording studio complex located at 6000 West Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.
With the backing of his clients Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby, Putnam moved to California to realize his dream of creating the largest recording studio complex on the West Coast. He first purchased United Studios at 6050 Sunset Boulevard, then purchased Western Recorders in 1961.
In 2006, Bill Putnam's famous United Western studio complex on West Sunset Boulevard was re-opened as the EastWest Studios retaining much of it's original acoustic design. After only two years in service, Bill Putnam's United Recorders in Los Angeles was booked to the limits of its capacity.
The buildings were then renamed United Western Recorders, and catered to some of the biggest artist of the era including Frank Sinatra, The Beach Boys and Elvis Presley. Frank Sinatra recorded what is considered some of his greatest work in Studio 1, including “My Way”, “The Summer Wind,” “That’s Life,” and the duet with his daughter Nancy Sinatra “Somethin’ Stupid.”
