As the film opens, a baby elephant is born and the herd gathers to ward off outsiders and protect the newborn calf. Later, two female elephants lift the sickly calf to prevent its lungs from collapsing. At fifteen, the bull elephants are driven out of the herd by the females because their playfulness might harm the younger calves.
