A voice-over at the beginning of the film states that during Reconstruction after the Civil War, when outlaw gangs terrorized Texas, one gang, hired by Jim Tulane, held the Panhandle Ranch by force in absence of its rightful owner. Although the film was set in the late 1860s, the aluminum industry was not actually established until the 1880s.
