Broken Bird follows Birdie, a biracial girl raised by her Jewish mom in a New Jersey suburb, as she spends a rare day with her father while preparing for her Bat Mitzvah. She overcomes her doubts, and decides to risk inviting him back into her life. Birdie confronts what independence means as she steps into adulthood on her own terms.

The award-winning short Broken Bird was Rachel's first film, and celebrated its World Premiere at the Berlinale International Film Festival 2020. Rachel earned Best Directorial Debut from the Heartland Indy Shorts Film Festival, and is excited to expand this story into her first feature.
Broken Bird. As Birdie is memorising a passage from the Torah for her bat mitzvah, Donna Summer‘s “Bad Girls” keeps playing in her head. Hebrew and disco music start to blend together, the letters on the page turning into lines from the song as Jewish and Afro-American culture merge into one.
