Bailey is the third child of Doug Bailey, who is the manager of Chloe x Halle, and Courtney (née Singleton) Bailey, who works as a human resources management professional. Bailey has three siblings, elder sisters Chloe (the other half of Chloe x Halle) and Ski, and younger brother Branson. At a young age, Halle and Chloe Bailey taught themselves to play musical instruments by watching tutorials on the video-sharing platform YouTube. When Halle was eight years old and Chloe was 10, their father started to teach them the basics of songwriting. “The first few songs we wrote were horrible,” Halle Bailey recalled in a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone magazine. “But as time went on, they turned into something beautiful.”
Bailey’s acting career also began at young age when she played a bit part alongside musician and actress Queen Latifah and Chloe Bailey in the romantic comedy-drama film Last Holiday (2006). Halle Bailey made guest appearances on actor-producer Tyler Perry’s sitcom House of Payne (2007), and she also performed in the musical television movie Let It Shine (2012).
The duo made a cameo appearance in the music video for “Freedom” from Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album Lemonade. Shortly after the premiere of Lemonade, Chloe x Halle released their critically acclaimed debut EP Sugar Symphony, which featured the single “Drop.” The online music magazine Stereogum summed up Sugar Symphony’s appeal in a 2016 review, “The EP drizzles sweet flourishes and beautifully controlled vocals over varied soundscapes melding classical, trap, traditional R&B, neo-soul, and electro, all delivered with a pop sensibility.” Later in 2016 Chloe x Halle joined Beyoncé’s Formation World Tour in Europe as an opening act.
In 2018 Halle and Chloe Bailey portrayed sisters Skyler and Jazlyn Forster, respectively, in the comedy series Grown-ish (2018–22), a spinoff of the sitcom Black-ish (2014–22). In that same year, Chloe x Halle released their first full-length studio album, The Kids Are Alright, which features the songs “Grown,” the theme song for Grown-ish, and “Warrior,” which appears on the soundtrack of the fantasy adventure film A Wrinkle in Time (2018). The duo wrote all of the songs on The Kids Are Alright and garnered Grammy Award nominations for best new artist and best urban contemporary album. In 2020 Chloe x Halle released the album Ungodly Hour, which received a Grammy nomination for best progressive R&B album. The album features the tracks “Wonder What She Thinks of Me” and “Do It,” which received Grammy nominations for best traditional R&B performance and best R&B song, respectively. Whereas The Kids Are Alright was mostly produced by Chloe Bailey, assisted by Halle Bailey, the duo brought in guest producers, such as Scott Storch and Jake One, to record Ungodly Hour.
