Dame Alcyion Cynthia Kiro GNZM QSO DStJ (Māori:); née Simpson; born 1958) is a New Zealand public-health academic, administrator, and advocate, who has served as the 22nd governor-general of New Zealand since 21 October 2021. Kiro is the first Māori woman and the third person of Māori descent to hold the office.
Dame Cindy Kiro is the first Māori woman to be appointed as Governor-General. She has a PhD in Social Policy, an MBA in Business Administration, and a long career in tertiary education, public health and child wellbeing.
Dame Cindy Kiro was appointed as the 22nd Governor-General of New Zealand in May 2021 and sworn in on 21 September 2021. She is a former tertiary education leader with a focus on public health and a descendant of Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Hine and Ngāti Kahu.
