Field Marshal John Standish Surtees Prendergast Vereker, 6th Viscount Gort, VC, GCB, CBE, DSO & Two Bars, MVO, MC (10 July 1886 – 31 March 1946) was a senior British Army officer. Field Marshal Viscount Gort VC (1886–1946), the Commander-in-Chief at Dunkirk, is commemorated at the house in Belgravia where he lived in the 1920s. Early career. John Standish Surtees Prendergast Vereker, more familiarly known as Jack, was born in London. He succeeded as 6th Viscount Gort – an Irish peerage – on his father’s death in 1902.
John Vereker, the sixth Viscount, was the great-grandson of his namesake. Following the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922 the family chose to emigrate and settle in County Durham.
