William Howe (born August 10, 1729—died July 12, 1814, Plymouth, Devonshire, England) was the commander in chief of the British army in North America (1776–78) who, despite several military successes, failed to destroy the Continental Army and stem the American Revolution.

27. Feb. 2024 · When Richard died in August 1799, the title of Viscount passed to Sir William, who became the 5th Viscount Howe. In 1803, Sir William Howe resigned from his public positions, citing ill health. His health continued to decline over the course of the next decade until he died at Twickenham on 12 July 1814, at the age of 84.
