He served in various roles in South Carolina's colonial and state governments, and supported the American cause in the Revolutionary War.
Henry Middleton (September 28, 1770 – June 14, 1846) was an American planter and political leader from Charleston, South Carolina. He was the 43rd Governor of South Carolina (1810–1812), and represented South Carolina in the U. S. Congress (1815–1819).
On October 22, 1774, as the First Continental Congress was nearing its conclusion, delegates from all twelve colonies in attendance unanimously elected Henry Middleton of South Carolina to serve as their new president.
Henry Middleton was among the wealthiest landowners in South Carolina with more than 50,000 acres and at least 800 slaves. After the death of his wife Mary Williams, he lived at The Oaks until his death in 1784.
Born in 1717 on his father's plantation near Charlestown, South Carolina, Henry Middleton would become one of the largest land- and slave-owners in the state. He was educated in England and elected to the state assembly shortly after his return, serving as speaker in 1747 and 1754.
