When Ohio’s Senator Robert Taft introduced a public housing bill, Wherry darkly wondered if the Ohioan was drifting toward socialism. Yet Wherry was a constant and oftentimes effective critic of the New Deal and Harry Truman’s Fair Deal.
Kenneth S. Wherry: A Featured Biography. Kenneth Wherry (1892-1951) sold cars, pianos, and livestock, and was a licensed undertaker before entering Republican politics in Nebraska in the 1920s. He served as mayor of Pawnee City before winning election to the U.S. Senate in 1942.
He became the first freshman Senator to secure the important post of Senate Whip. Senator Wherry easily won re-election in 1948, and the following year became Republican floor leader of the Senate. Senator Wherry’s political career ended with his death on November 30, 1951.
