Er wurde am 8. Juni 1638 in Montpellier in Frankreich geboren und verstarb am 21. Mai 1715 mit 76 Jahren ebenda.

In another work, Botanicum Monspeliense (Lyons, 1676), Magnol described 1354 species growing around the area. He almost always gave localities and frequently added notes on the medicinal or other uses. This work was the basis for the Linnaean dissertation on the Montpellier region in 1756.
An innovator in classification, Magnol was one of the first, in his Prodromus historiae generalis plantarum (1689), to classify plants in tables that made possible rapid identifications.
It was named after the French botanist Pierre Magnol. The English botanist William Sherard, who studied botany in Paris under Joseph Pitton de Tournefort, a pupil of Magnol, was most probably the first after Plumier to adopt the genus name Magnolia.
1. Apr. 2021 · Every year in spring, a beautifully growing tree develops into the star in our garden, the magnolia. From now on, when I see them, I will also think of the French botanist Pierre Magnol, who introduced the concept of family for related plant groups into botany.
