A naval gunner, Oscar Wisting, was accepted on Prestrud's recommendation because he could turn his hand to most tasks. Although he had little previous experience of sledge dogs, Amundsen wrote that Wisting developed "a way of his own" with them, and became a useful amateur veterinarian.
Oscar Wisting was a Norwegian sailor who participated in all of Amundsen's expeditions to the South and North Poles. He was a skilled and versatile handyman, a loyal friend and a devoted family man who faced many hardships and challenges in his 16 years of polar service.
Oscar Wisting was one of the first to reach both poles with Roald Amundsen. He also learned medicine, dentistry and plumbing with Amundsen's support, and died on board Fram in 1936.
