Each year – including this year prior to the Beijing Olympics – he participated in long walks and cycle rides to raise awareness of the plight of the Tibetan people. He is survived by his wife Kunyang Norbu, and three sons.
It also saw the birth of his elder brother, Thubten Jigme Norbu, who was acknowledged by the 13th Dalai Lama as the reincarnation of the great lama Taktser Rinpoche. In 2018, the house has reportedly been renovated and is monitored by the Chinese Communist Party .
