  2. Roger Bruce Chaffee (/ ˈ tʃ æ f iː /; February 15, 1935 – January 27, 1967) was an American naval officer, aviator and aeronautical engineer who was a NASA astronaut in the Apollo program. Chaffee was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he became an Eagle Scout.

On January 27, 1967, his life, along with his two crewmates, was tragically lost in a flash fire that sparked inside the command module.

Chaffee died along with the veteran space travellers Virgil I. Grissom and Edward H. White II. They were the first casualties.
