Édouard Alphonse James de Rothschild (24 February 1868 – 30 June 1949), also known as Baron Édouard de Rothschild was an aristocrat, French financier and a member of the prominent Rothschild banking family of France.
Edouard Alphonse James de Rothschild was born in Paris on 24 February 1868, the third child and only son of Alphonse and Leonora de Rothschild. Surviving a youthful duel, which he fought to combat anti- Semitic insults, Edouard and his younger cousin, Robert, directed the affairs of the Paris House.
This diversification was continued when James’ sons, Alphonse (1827-1905), Gustave (1829-1911) and Edmond (1845-1934), became partners in the bank. The French House continued to fund and build railways, playing a major role in the development of the French and European rail network.
Along with his wife, Betty, and later his son Alphonse, James developed a museum’s worth of art and objects that he meticulously displayed throughout his many residences. This October, Christie’s in New York will host the first-ever North American auction of objects from the Rothschild family.
