Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki (c. 1832–1893) was a Māori leader, the founder of the Ringatū religion and guerrilla fighter. While fighting alongside government forces against the Hauhau in 1865, he was accused of spying.
Te Kooti fought on the government side in the New Zealand Wars before being exiled to the Chatham Islands on charges of espionage. He later escaped back to the mainland and fought a long guerilla war against government forces.

On 4 July 1868, Te Kooti led an escape from Wharekauri by 163 men and 135 women and children. They seized the supply ship Rifleman – the ‘ark of salvation’ that would return ‘thy children … to their own border.’. Though Te Kooti had given clear instructions that no one was to be harmed one guard, Michael Harnett, was killed.
