Borommarachathirat was born Prince Athittayawong to Ramathibodi II in 1488. He was named uparaja ( heir presumptive and viceroy ) at Phitsanulok in 1515. Following his father's death, Athittayawong succeeded the throne as Borommarachathirat IV.
Chetthathirat stammte aus dem Haus Sukhothai, war der älteste Sohn von König Songtham und der ältere Bruder des späteren Königs Athittayawong. In seiner Kindheit wurde er Phra Chetthakuman (พระเชษฐากุมาร), wörtlich: „Chettha das Kind“, oder einfach Chettha gerufen.
