OBITUARY. J. J. C. SMART AC (16TH SEPTEMBER 1920–6TH OCTOBER 2012) John Jamieson Carswell Smart, or Jack Smart (as he was known throughout the philosophical world), was English by birth, Scottish by schooling and Australian by vocation.
He was one of the earliest and most influential advocates of the mind-brain identity theory, the view that mental states are identical with brain states. He also played a major role in articulating and defending realism in science, the four-dimensional view of time and act utilitarianism in ethics.
