DIAN FOSSEY entschloss sich zu einer aggressiven Kampagne gegen die illegale, aber geduldete Wilderei und organisierte bewaffnete Patrouillen. Durch zahlreiche Fachpublikationen errang DIAN FOSSEY weltweit Anerkennung für ihre wissenschaftliche Arbeit und galt bald als weltbeste Expertin für Berggorillas. 1974 erhielt sie von der University of Cambridge den Doktortitel für Zoologie.
