Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff Jr. (Dutch: [vɑn (ə)t ˈɦɔf]; 30 August 1852 – 1 March 1911) was a Dutch physical chemist. A highly influential theoretical chemist of his time, van 't Hoff was the first winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1901 was awarded to Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff "in recognition of the extraordinary services he has rendered by the discovery of the laws of chemical dynamics and osmotic pressure in solutions"
Jacobus Henricus van ’t Hoff (born Aug. 30, 1852, Rotterdam, Neth.—died March 1, 1911, Berlin, Ger.) was a Dutch physical chemist and the first winner of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry (1901), for his work on rates of chemical reaction, chemical equilibrium, and osmotic pressure.
Jacobus Henricus van’t Hoff, a Dutch scientist, conducted studies in the late 1800s that led to the birth of a new scientific field: physical chemistry. In 1872 van’t Hoff (1852–1911) went to Bonn to study for a year.
