Argumentative old Cuss Albert Haddock proves that a cheque written on the side of a cow is legal tender. Based on the stories of A P Herbert who trained as a lawyer though he never practised and became an MP for Oxford University just so he could sponsor the modern divorce law.

Haddock reads the Weekly Argus and thinks astrologist Sagittarius is plausible. He later learns his wife lost £100 on the stock exchange listening to Sagittarius. Haddock believes he misleading, false and deceptive and takes him to court.

The stories were first published in Punch magazine in 1924 and were later released over six books, the first of which was Misleading Cases, printed in 1927. Alan Melville adapted the stories for the first two series.
