  5. 1679 - 1752. Born in Paris, he was the son of the portrait painter François de Troy; studied in Italy from 1699 until about 1706. He became a successful and fashionable artist, in all branches of painting, particularly genre. He was appointed Director of the French Academy in Rome in 1738 and remained there until his death.
