  4. Frank Johnston (also known as Franz) was born on June 19, 1888 in Toronto. Like many other Group members, he joined Grip Engraving Co. as a commercial artist. He studied in Germany from 1904 to 1907. Although his official association with the Group of Seven was brief, his friendship with the artists dated back over a much longer period.

  5. Frank Johnston (1888-1949) was a painter who participated in the first exhibition of the Group of Seven in 1920, but left Toronto in 1921 to become the principal of the Winnipeg School of Art. He painted landscapes in tempera, using decorative and realistic styles, and was known for his reflections of light on water.
