The Ashcan School, also called the Ash Can School, was an artistic movement in the United States during the late 19th-early 20th century that produced works portraying scenes of daily life in New York, often in the city's poorer neighborhoods.
Bellows was soon a student of Robert Henri, who at the time was teaching at the New York School of Art. While studying there, Bellows became associated with Henri's "The Eight" and the Ashcan School, a group of artists who advocated painting contemporary American society in all its forms.
Henri and his former-Philadelphia associates comprised the first generation of what came to be known as the Ashcan School. A second generation consisted of Henri’s New York students, of whom George Bellows (1882–1925) was the most devoted. The term Ashcan School was suggested by a drawing by Bellows captioned

George Wesley Bellows (* 12. August 1882 in Columbus, Ohio; † 8. Januar 1925 in New York City) war ein amerikanischer Maler, Zeichner und Lithograf, der vor allem durch seine Bilder des Großstadtlebens in New York bekannt wurde. Durch seine Motivwahl wurde er der Ashcan School zugerechnet.
The Ashcan School formed out of an urge to rebel against the dogmatic criteria of popular painting of the time, namely American Impressionism and academic realism.
