Joseph Edgar Maddy (October 14, 1892 – April 18, 1966) was an American music educator and conductor. [1] [2] Early life. He was born in Wellington, Kansas on Octobert 14, 1892. Both of his parents were teachers. He attended Wichita College of Music in Wichita, Kansas, where he studied violin and later joined the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra.

Interlochen Arts Academy is a pre-professional arts boarding high school, founded in 1962 by Joseph E. Maddy. The school offers seven arts majors in creative writing, dance, film and new media, interdisciplinary arts, music, theater, and visual arts.

In 1918 in Rochester, New York, Maddy became the nation's first supervisor of instrumental music. He later taught music at Morton High School in Richmond, Indiana. While there, he formed the first national high school orchestra in 1926. In 1928, he formed the National Music Camp.
Prior to being called "Wabash Blues", the first name of this significant early jazz standard was called "The Trombone Jazz" and was orchestrated by Joseph E. Maddy in the summer of 1918 at Kansas City's Electric Park - a then summer proving ground for vaudeville artists.
