Vokalmusik ist Musik, die mit der menschlichen Stimme ausgeführt wird, im Gegensatz zur Instrumentalmusik. Ihr liegen für gewöhnlich literarische Texte zugrunde, die von einem Komponisten vertont wurden; von modernen Komponisten werden vereinzelt auch Vokalisen oder Phantasietexte verwendet.
Vocal bezeichnet einen in einem sonst ausschließlich instrumental geprägten Musikstück oft wiederholten kurzen Gesang oder Spruch. Im Extremfall besteht es nur aus einem einzigen Wort. Sein Zweck ist es, den Hörer zum Mitsingen zu animieren und den Wiedererkennungswert des Stücks zu steigern.
Man unterscheidet reine Vokalmusik (z. B. A-cappella -Chormusik) von Instrumentalmusik und kombinierten Formen (z. B. Kantate, Oratorium, Oper ). Der Begriff Gesang umfasst per Definition zwar sämtliche Formen des musikalischen Stimmengebrauchs, allerdings sind einige Formen vom gewöhnlichen Gesang abzugrenzen.
