Die heutige Universität Bonn wurde dann am 18. Oktober 1818 vom preußischen König Friedrich Wilhelm III. als sechste preußische Universität neben der Universität Greifswald, der Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin, der Albertus-Universität Königsberg, der Universität Halle (Saale) und der schlesischen Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Breslau gegründet.

Kosten. Die Universität Bonn ist eine öffentliche Hochschule, daher gibt es keine Studiengebühren; die Bewerbung für einen Studienplatz ist ebenfalls kostenlos. Alle Studierenden entrichten jedoch einmal im Semester einen Sozialbeitrag, welcher von Vertreter*innen der Studierenden demokratisch beschlossen wird.
Semestertermine. Das akademische Jahr wird an der Universität Bonn und vielen anderen Hochschulen in zwei halbjährliche Semester eingeteilt. Das Wintersemester beginnt dabei im Herbst, das Sommersemester im Frühjahr. Die formalen Semesterstartzeiten sind nicht identisch mit den Vorlesungszeiten.
