Bayonne liegt im französischen Teil des Baskenlandes am Zusammenfluss der Flüsse Adour und Nive. Sie ist im Westen knapp 4 Kilometer vom Atlantik (Golf von Biskaya) entfernt. Mit 52.749 Einwohnern (Stand 1. Januar 2021) ist Bayonne nach Pau die zweitgrößte Stadt des Départements Pyrénées-Atlantiques.
Bayonne est, en 2016, une commune de plus de 50 000 habitants, la principale de l'aire urbaine de Bayonne où elle côtoie Anglet et Biarritz. Malgré ses influences métisses, elle est aujourd'hui reconnue comme la principale ville du Pays basque français.
