The illustrations were by Horace Castelli, a French artist. This is the first book of a trilogy; its sequels are Good Little Girls (1858) and The Holidays (1859).

Biography: The Countess of Ségur is best known for her novel "Les Malheurs de Sophie" (Sophie's Misfortunes), written for children. Ségur was the daughter of Count Fyodor Rostopchin, the governor of Moscow during Napoleon 's invasion in 1812. Some historians claim Rostopchin organized the great fire that forced Napoleon to retreat from the city.
