Village History. The area that became Shorewood in 1917 was first sighted 343 years earlier by the French explorer Pere Jacques Marquette and his party as they canoed past this virgin territory on Lake Michigan. The area was then the hunting grounds of the Sioux and Algonquin Indians.

The Shorewood Historic District is a large neighborhood on the west side of Shorewood Hills, Wisconsin - homes built in various styles between 1924 and 1963. In 2002 the district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
