John Thomas Schieffer (born October 4, 1947) is an American diplomat and entrepreneur who served as U.S. Ambassador to Australia from 2001 to 2005 and as U.S. Ambassador to Japan from 2005 to 2009.
On April 25, 2011, Selig appointed Tom Schieffer, former United States Ambassador to Japan and former president of the Texas Rangers, to oversee the Dodgers' finances. Schieffer had veto power over any team expenditure over $5,000.
Schieffer is the older brother of Tom Schieffer, a long time Texas state legislator and friend and former business partner of President George W. Bush, who was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Australia from 2001 to 2005 by President Bush, and served as U.S. Ambassador to Japan from 2005 through 2009.
