Shut up about Barclay Perkins. Saturday 31 December 2022. Let's Brew - 1812 Truman Stout. Here's a recipe from the earliest surviving Truman brewing book. The one I forgot to process for over 15 years. With war still raging in Europe, taxes were high in 1812. Which explains the rather modest gravity of this Stout.
Shut up about Barclay Perkins: 2023. Sunday 31 December 2023. Draught Old Ale in the 1970s. Mostly a bottled beer in its stronger iterations, there were some breweries who had draught versions available during the winter. Sometimes, served from a pin on the bar. And often limited to halves because of the extreme strength (for the day).
Established in 1616, by the early nineteenth century it was the largest brewery in the world. From 1781 it was operated by Barclay Perkins & Co, who in 1955 merged with the Courage Brewery, which already owned the nearby Anchor Brewhouse. The Park Street brewery was demolished in 1981.
