Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham. (1536-1624), Lord High Admiral. Sitter associated with 15 portraits. Charles Howard was Queen Elizabeth I 's cousin and enjoyed her friendship and confidence. Appointed Lord High Admiral in 1585, he held chief command against the Spanish Armada.
1536-1624. Biography. Charles Howard, 2nd Baron of Effingham, Lord High Admiral, commander of the flagship 'Ark Royal' against the Spanish Armada. Created Earl of Nottingham in 1596. Note that the title became extinct after the death of his second eldest son, the third Earl, in 1681.
