Der Kojote (Canis latrans, Coyote; von aztek. coyōtl), auch bekannt als nordamerikanischer Präriewolf oder Steppenwolf, gehört zur Familie der Hunde (Canidae) und sieht einem kleineren Wolf ähnlich. Sein Fell (siehe auch Pelzarten) hat keine einheitliche Farbe, sondern variiert zwischen verschiedenen Tönen von gelbbraun und graubraun. Kehle und Brust sind weiß.

9. Jan. 2024 · Coyote (Canis latrans) Coyotes are the most abundant predator at Jewel Cave National Monument. They can be heard howling and yipping in the morning and evening. NPS/ Jim Peaco. Coyotes are often seen alone, although they will also spend time in family groups. Lone coyotes are sometimes seen along the Canyons Trail loop.
This canine has been named Canis latrans var. and has been referred to as the eastern coyote, northeastern coyote, coywolf, and the southern tweed wolf. Coyotes and wolves first hybridized in the Great Lakes region, followed by a hybrid coyote expansion that created the largest mammalian hybrid zone known.
