Downing College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge and currently has around 950 students. Founded in 1800, it was the only college to be added to Cambridge University between 1596 and 1869, and is often described as the oldest of the new colleges and the newest of the old. [6]

Founded in 1800, through a bequest made by Sir George Downing 3rd Baronet, the Downing College Charter granted a perpetual college for students in ‘Law, physic and the other useful arts and learning’. Downing elected its first Fellow in 1808 and admitted its first undergraduate in 1817.
21. Juni 2024 · The College was founded by Sir George Downing, 3rd Bart. (16841749), of Gamlingay Park, who directed in his will dated 1717 that should his legatees die without issue trust property was to be used to found a College in Cambridge to be called "Downing's College".
