History. Santa Cruz County was one of the original counties of California, created in 1850 at the time of statehood. In the original act, the county was given the name of "Branciforte" after the Spanish pueblo founded there in 1797. A major watercourse in the county, Branciforte Creek, still bears this name.
Santa Cruz County was established the same year, and Santa Cruz became the county seat. Santa Cruz was incorporated as a town in 1866, and became a charter city in 1876. Following the U.S. Conquest of California, Santa Cruz steadily grew with the arrival of immigrants from the eastern United States.

Mai 2024 · It became the site of Mission Santa Cruz (founded 1791, reconstructed 1931; now preserved as a state historic park), the 12th in the California chain of 21 missions, and of the model Spanish colony (village) of Branciforte (1797). The area came under Mexican control in the 1820s, and soon Americans began arriving.

The county was established in 1899. It borders Pima County to the north and west, Cochise County to the east, and the Mexican state of Sonora to the south. Santa Cruz County includes the Nogales, Arizona Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Tucson -Nogales, Arizona Combined Statistical Area .
